How many times have we finished a long shift at work, finding ourselves with a) super sore feet, b) an aching back, and/or c) stiff and painful wrists?

Both in the retail and hospitality business, the answer usually is: too many :c

Here’s some good news though! There is a way to make your shift more comfortable and potentially even extend your career within the industry, if that is your goal.

Welcome to the world of ergonomics!

The ABCs of Ergonomics: Not Just Fancy Office Chairs

When I first heard the word "ergonomics," I was pretty sure it meant expensive chairs and fancy keyboards. Thankfully, I was wrong!

Ergonomics, in simplest of terms, is the science of designing the workplace to fit the worker, not the other way around. It's about making your job easier on your body, whether you're a barista, a waiter, or a retail sales associate.

In my door hosting days I learned the importance of ergonomics the hard way. Standing for hours on end and maintaining your best welcoming (~ish) smile can make you want to hit something or someone really quickly.

It was when I started paying attention to my posture and making small adjustments to my routine that I finally noticed some improvement in how I felt after each shift.

Ergonomics and Yoga: A Mindful Approach to Work

Interestingly, the principles of ergonomics share a lot in common with modern yoga philosophy.

Both practices emphasise:

  • body awareness,

  • proper alignment,

  • and the connection between physical well-being and overall health.

Just as yoga encourages mindfulness in movement and posture, ergonomics promotes conscious attention to how we position and move our bodies throughout the shift.

Think about it: the focus on proper posture in ergonomics is just like the emphasis on alignment in yoga poses. Both of them aim to reduce strain on the body and promote balance.

Ergonomics in Action: Small Changes, Big Impact

Now that we know what ergonomics is and how we can take charge, let's look at how it can make a difference in our daily work life.

For the Retail Pros

1. Standing tall: If you're on your feet all day, good posture is your true bestie. Keep your shoulders back, your chin up, and your core engaged. It might feel awkward at first, but your back will thank you later!

2. The cash register duties: When operating a cash register, position yourself directly in front of the keypad to avoid unnecessary twisting. If possible, alternate hands when scanning items to reduce the constant strain on one side of your body.

3. Shoes matter: Invest in comfortable, supportive shoes. Trust me, it's worth every penny.

For the Hospitality Heroes

1. Tray master: Challenge yourself to become ambidextrous with tray carrying. While maintaining proper form, practice carrying trays with your non-dominant hand during quieter times. This balanced approach can help prevent overuse injuries and, as a bonus, you get to show off your shiny new skill :)

2. Bartender's best friends: Keep most used items within easy reach, and better yet, just below your eye level, to avoid constant stretching and bending.

3. Taking orders: Practice maintaining good posture while taking orders. Keep your notepad at a comfortable height to avoid neck strain, and try to position yourself where you can hear customers clearly without leaning in too close.

Your Ergonomic Journey Starts Now!

So, there you have it – ergonomics made simple! By making a few of these small changes in how you work, you can avoid injuries, lessen the pains, and enjoy your job more. Isn't that worth giving it a try?

Here's your challenge for this week: Pick one of the ergonomic tips from this post and try it out during your shifts. Then, come back here and let me know how it felt in the comments! Did you notice any differences? Have you thought of any ergonomic tips of your own? Let me know!

Remember, you deserve to feel good at work. So stand tall, move smart, and let ergonomics be your secret weapon to stay healthy. Your future self will thank you!

Much love,
